What isÊpreloadÊand why is it soÊimportant?

Ê ÊÊ*Preload sets a constant pressure on the bearings preventing the inner and outer race from moving independently from each other (walking). Bearings set without being preloaded will allow the outer race to walk in and out of alignment with the inner race.ÊWalking will damage the bearing journals ultimately leading to a failure which can echo into the bearing carrier if left unchecked.ÊIn this instance the wheel/tire will rock freely when theÊsuspension is unloaded. When this is occurring you may feel excessive vibration/chatter when driving.
