What isÊpreloadÊand why is it soÊimportant?

Ê ÊÊ*Preload sets a constant pressure on the bearings preventing the inner and outer race from moving independently from each other (walking). Bearings set without being preloaded will allow the outer race to walk in and out of alignment with the inner race. Walking will damage the bearing journals ultimately leading to a failure which can echo into the bearing carrier if left unchecked.
